THE boss of the world’s first space travel firm has revealed how a film producer attempted to hire the world’s most advanced space craft – to make a porn movie.

Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn has said he was baffled when he was approached by someone interested in hiring the whole spacecraft – only to find out he was a porn baron.

The Scots-born boss, who heads-up Virgin’s space tourism arm for Richard Branson, said that he didn’t know how much was on offer, but that money was clearly no object.

Shanghai will host the World Expo next year, and city officials are preparing for the influx of foreigners with a campaign to ban citizens from wearing their pajamas out in the streets. An article in the Chengdu Business Daily expresses outrage over the campaign as a civil rights abuse. Snip:

Many Shanghai residents are used to loitering around the streets in their pajamas. But now the municipal government is making every effort to stop them from doing so, because it would be a "loss of face" for city authorities if a foreigner sees people walking the streets in pajamas during the 2010 World Expo.

NSA to store yottabytes of surveillance data in Utah mega repository

The NSA is constructing a datacenter in the Utah desert that they project will be storing yottabytes of surveillance data. And what is a yottabyte? I’m glad you asked.

On a remote edge of Utah's dry and arid high desert, where temperatures often zoom past 100 degrees, hard-hatted construction workers with top-secret clearances are preparing to build what may become America's equivalent of Jorge Luis Borges's "Library of Babel," a place where the collection of information is both infinite and at the same time monstrous, where the entire world's knowledge is stored, but not a single word is understood. At a million square feet, the mammoth $2 billion structure will be one-third larger than the US Capitol and will use the same amount of energy as every house in Salt Lake City combined.

Unlike Borges's "labyrinth of letters," this library expects few visitors. It's being built by the ultra-secret National Security Agency—which is primarily responsible for "signals intelligence," the collection and analysis of various forms of communication—to house trillions of phone calls, e-mail messages, and data trails: Web searches, parking receipts, bookstore visits, and other digital "pocket litter." Lacking adequate space and power at its city-sized Fort Meade, Maryland, headquarters, the NSA is also completing work on another data archive, this one in San Antonio, Texas, which will be nearly the size of the Alamodome.

Just how much information will be stored in these windowless cybertemples? A clue comes from a recent report prepared by the MITRE Corporation, a Pentagon think tank. "As the sensors associated with the various surveillance missions improve," says the report, referring to a variety of technical collection methods, "the data volumes are increasing with a projection that sensor data volume could potentially increase to the level of Yottabytes (10²⁴ Bytes) by 2015." Roughly equal to about a septillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) pages of text, numbers beyond Yottabytes haven't yet been named. Once vacuumed up and stored in these near-infinite "libraries," the data are then analyzed by powerful infoweapons, supercomputers running complex algorithmic programs, to determine who among us may be—or may one day become—a terrorist. In the NSA's world of automated surveillance on steroids, every bit has a history and every keystroke tells a story.

Ingredients

8 ¹/2 cup cabbage
¹/3 cup carrot
1 teaspoon onion, chopped finely
³/4 cup buttermilk
¹/2 cup mayonaise
¹/4 cup milk
2 tablespoon lemon juice
¹/2 teaspoon salt
2 ¹/2 teaspoon pepper
¹/3 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

1. Core the cabbage, then shred the cabbage fine using the fine disk for the shredder attachment to the mixer. Shred the carrot the same way. Mix together cabbage, carrot and onion.

2. In a bowl combine the buttermilk, mayonnaise, milk and lemon juice with a whisk until well combined. Add the salt and pepper. Add the sugar to the sauce until well mixed in. Add the sauce to the cabbage and carrot mixture and mix well and allow the mixture to marinate for 13 hours in the refrigerator

New research suggests that there is plenty of oxygen available in the subsurface ocean of Europa to support oxygen-based metabolic processes for life similar to that on Earth. THREE Malaysian women were caught having an orgy with 19 Bangladeshi men on the first day of Hari Raya.

None of them realised they were being monitored by a group of policemen, who had surrounded the house in Felda Krau, Raub, before they were raided at 2.30am.

Harian Metro, quoting Raub OCPD Supt Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman, said all 22 were arrested, including the three women aged between 17 and 43.

He said investigations revealed that the women had spent the past two nights in the house to satisfy the lust of the Bangladeshis, aged between 20 and 30.

'All three women are detained for investigations under Section 372B of the Penal Code for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution,' he said, adding that police also found several used condoms in the house.

He said during the raid, some of the men tried to escape but failed as the house had been cordoned off.

A 56-year-old man, suspected to be the pimp, was also detained.

Mysterious, glowing clouds previously seen almost exclusively in Earth’s polar regions have appeared in the skies over the United States and Europe over the past several days.

Photographers and other sky watchers in Omaha, Paris, Seattle, and other locations have run outside to capture images of what scientists call noctilucent (”night shining”) clouds. Formed by ice literally at the boundary where the earth’s atmosphere meets space 50 miles up, they shine because they are so high that they remain lit by the sun even after our star is below the horizon.

The clouds might be beautiful, but they could portend global changes caused by global warming. Noctilucent clouds are a fundamentally new phenomenon in the temperate mid-latitude sky, and it’s not clear why they’ve migrated down from the poles. Or why, over the last 25 years, more of them are appearing in the polar regions, too, and shining more brightly.

Swarms of giant Nomura’s jellyfish are about to descend on the waters off Japan, putting the country’s fishing industry at serious risk.

Nomura’s jellyfish grow up to 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) in diameter and weigh up to 220 kilograms (450 pounds), and are commonly found in the waters between China and Japan. Scientists have detected unprecedented numbers heading to Japan, in what local media has described as a “jellyfish typhoon.”

Nomura’s jellyfish populations have surged previously during 1958 and 1995, dealing a huge blow to Japan’s fishing industry. The jellyfish, which are as large as a man, damage nets and kill fish with venom.

Although numbers this year aren’t known yet, during the 2005 surge an estimated 300 to 500 million Nomura’s jelly fish passed through the Tsushima Strait between South Korea and Japan every day.
